DIMAPUR — To address the mounting traffic congestion and the challenges faced by the public, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Kohima, has decided to set up the ‘Ward Parking Committee’ as a pilot project in five wards.

The decision to set up the committee was taken during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Kohima, on August 16 chaired by deputy commissioner of Kohima, Shanavas C, in his office’s conference hall.

A DIPR report stated that the SDO of Kohima Sardar has been designated as the convenor, while DSP (Traffic), RTA representatives, KMC officials and ward chairmen were designated as members. The aim was to manage traffic in the wards more effectively.

The members also discussed on immediate utilisation of the Kohima Smart City Development Ltd. (KSCDL) multi-level parking facilities on an experimental basis to alleviate traffic congestion. It stated that a committee led by additional SP of Kohima with members from relevant departments would be formed to explore innovative methods for operating two multi-level car parking facilities.

KSCDL was urged to install high-resolution CCTV cameras at key entry and exit points around Kohima to facilitate proper parking management. The members also discussed feeder passenger vehicle services to ISBT, regional taxi parking, identification of a ‘Green Channel’ for dedicated city bus services for students and office workers and review and regulation of traffic management outside Oking Hospital and Jail Colony.

During a PowerPoint presentation on the current traffic scenario in Kohima, the DSP (Traffic) highlighted factors contributing to traffic issues such as population density, non-compliance with traffic rules, and VIP motorcades. With approximately 1,95,284 vehicles plying daily in Kohima, he stated that traffic management remains a significant challenge.

Other subjects discussed in the meeting included strategies to ease traffic congestion during peak hours, construction of a veterinary centre, upgrading of educational institutions and various infrastructure projects aimed at improving the overall living conditions of the community.
