DIMAPUR — Personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from Dimapur arrested four leaders, who were allegedly involved in ‘rail roko’ protest at Chungajan on June 5.
A press release issued by the assistant security commissioner of RPF stated that one pick-up van, which was negligently crossing an unauthorised level crossing at Chungajan yard under Golaghat district met an accident with train no. 22503 up Vivek Express resulting in damage to the vehicle. It stated that the driver of the pick-up van identified as Bipul Gogai, resident of Nababasti under Chungajan police station, fled away from the spot. It added that he was subsequently arrested on June 19 and sent to court for committing offence under section 154 and 161 of the Railway Act.
Following the incident, local villagers numbering about 200 under the leadership of Subhash Saikia, Pranjal Saikia, Diganta Gogoi and Dipu Bora, all resident of Chungajan, staged a rail roko sit-in protest on the railway track.
It stated that the obstruction to railway track was withdrawn after two hours following the intervention from the border magistrates of Dhansiri/ Sarupathar, ASC/ RPF/Dimapur and local police. It added that three mail/ express trains were detained at different stations due to the protest.
It stated that RPF Dimapur has registered a case U/S 146,147, 153, 174(a) of the Railway Act, 1989 against the offenders. They were later forwarded to the court of Ld.SRM/ Dimapur on June 23.
