Rongmei community in Kohima celebrates ‘Chakaan Gaan-Ngai’

Kohima, Jan. 21 (EMN): The Rongmei community of Naga Bazaar in Kohima celebrated ‘Chakaan Gaan-Ngai’ on January 15 at Kathuilong Rongmei community hall, Naga Bazaar, Kohima.

‘Chakaan Gaan-Ngai’ (New Year) is the biggest festival of the Rongmei tribe, observed to ask God’s blessing for good harvest for the year ahead and bid farewell to the departed souls who have died in the previous year, stated Thuangam Kamei, Secretary of Gaan-Ngai organising committee.

The programme was chaired by Dijonlung Gangmei, while Babu Golmei, chairman of Rongmei Development Society, Naga Bazaar shared the greetings.

K Neibou Sekhose, Chairman of T Khel Council, graced the occasion as the guest of honour and spoke on the topic “Unity is strength.” He stressed on the importance of unity in building a society and encouraged the community to further strengthen the relationship between Tsütuonuomia and T Khel Kabui (Rongmei) of Naga Bazaar, which has been maintained by the forefathers.

The convener of the festival, Thanchapu Rongmei, delivered the vote of thanks.

The festival, which was marked by cultural dances, was attended by T Khel GBs, members of student unions, youth organisation, women council, T Khel Gorkha Union, Gorkha Students’ Union, and representatives from Naga Bazaar Panchayat and various organisations from the Rongmei community in Kohima.
