KOHIMA — Ronald Meru, a teacher at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Sechu Zubza, is among 48 school teachers selected for the National Teachers Award 2026, which will be conferred by President of India Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, September 5, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

Short documentaries highlighting the exemplary work of each awardee will also be showcased during the event.
Speaking to Eastern Mirror on Saturday, the 53-year-old teacher from Khonoma village said he teaches History and has been in the profession for the past 24 years. Prior to his posting at GHSS Sechu Zubza in 2024, he taught at Government Primary School (GPS), Khonoma, and GHSS Pungro in Kiphire, where he served for 10 years.
This is not the first recognition Meru has received for his dedication to the teaching profession. He received a district-level award in 2018, followed by a state-level award in 2023.
Expressing his excitement at being selected for the national honour, he thanked the Department of School Education for the recognition.

The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education organises a national-level function on Teachers’ Day every year to confer the National Teachers Awards on outstanding teachers selected through a rigorous, transparent and online selection process.
According to the Ministry, the awards recognise the unique contributions of some of the finest teachers in the country and honour those who, through their commitment and dedication, have improved the quality of school education and enriched the lives of their students.
This year, 48 school teachers--26 male and 22 female--were selected through a three-stage selection process at the district, state and national levels conducted by the Department of School Education and Literacy, according to the Ministry of Education. The awardees are from 27 States, seven Union Territories and six organisations of the Central Government.
