MOKOKCHUNG — A much-anticipated repair works on the road between Rotary Junction and IOC Junction in Mokokchung town began on Saturday, marking a significant development after years of neglect.

The initiative is being led by the Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (OKM) in collaboration with Mokokchung district administration and departments concerned.

The stretch, a vital lifeline connecting Mokokchung town with Assam as well as key areas like the New Market and Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH), has been in a state of disrepair for nearly a decade. Commuters have long struggled with the pothole-ridden road, and only temporary fixes by various unions and well-wishers have kept the road usable.

While visiting the repair site, OKM officials shared that following a meeting with the district administration on August 30, a joint discussion with the Urban Development Department was held on August 31 under the initiative of the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung.

This led to the launch of the much-needed road repair efforts, with the Urban Development Department providing machinery and labour support, while OKM was responsible for mobilising resources.

The initial phase of the work, which will likely take two to three days, focuses on filling up potholes along the entire stretch. The OKM officials also revealed that full pavement of the road has been placed on the priority list by the Urban Development Department, with construction expected to start by October or November this year.

The OKM has pledged to monitor the progress of the road construction, ensuring its timely completion, and has urged the Urban Development Department to repair other deteriorating roads within the municipal area.

They also acknowledged the efforts of DC Mokokchung towards ensuring the road remains motor-able, by coordinating the work between the Public Works Department (National Highways) and the Urban Development Department.

As per official timetable, road maintenance from Rotary Junction to Edith Douglas School Junction is scheduled between 7 am and 8 pm from September 14 to the 16th. During this period, the affected stretch will be a ‘No Entry’ zone for vehicles, with alternate traffic routes arranged by the police.
