RIMS Imphal celebrates 50th Foundation Day

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a premier medical institute in Imphal and the only medical college in the northeast to figure amongst the top 50 medical institutions and universities,

Speaking on the occasion held at the institution’s jubilee hall, the director, prof. A Santa Singh highlighted the newly installed equipment and facilities in different faculties and hospital set-ups apart from various infrastructure developments.

‘A new state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI machine was installed during the Covid-19 and the same was inaugurated in February 2021, while one Liquid Oxygen Plant with a 10 KL capacity was procured and installed in August 2021. Two PSA Oxygen plants of 1000 LPM capacity provided by the government of India under PM Cares Fund was installed in the hospital campus in August 2021, which is now functional. Besides introducing new set-ups for paediatrics and gynaecology, the institute is preparing to face any possible third wave, he informed.

Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr. H Priyosakhi said that the 50 year-old institute has so far produced 3,560 doctors, 1968 specialists,143 Bachelor of Dental Surgery doctors,282 BSc nurses and 67 M Phil students since its establishment in 1972.The corresponding numbers for MCh/DM courses are 13 (on roll) and 20 (passed). So far, a total of 67 students have been trained in MPhil in Clinical Psychology, he added.

In July, the executive council of RIMS has agreed to increase the number of PG seats in the departments of Radio-diagnosis, Anaesthesiology and Orthopaedics from the existing two to six, 10 to 22 and two to four respectively. It also agreed to the starting of Emergency Medicine course (MD) and DM course in Cardiology.

RIMS ranked 43rd Position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework of Human Resource Development (NIRF) 2020-21, which was released by the ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India. Meanwhile, AIIMS, New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh and CMC Vellore are the top three ranked institutions in the rankings.
