Retaining wall collapsed in Lakhuti village
WOKHA — Incessant rain has triggered landslide resulting in collapse of a retaining wall at the newly inaugurated Khelo India football ground in Lakhuti village under Wokha district on July 22.
The football ground, funded through Khelo India scheme amounting to approximately INR 5 crore, was inaugurated on December 16, 2023. While the retaining wall was severely damaged, there was no report of any casualty.
The chairman of Lakhuti village council, Mhonthung Yanthan, informed this Correspondent that the incident occurred early morning on July 22 affecting two houses above the football ground (Wozu). He informed that the occupants of the two houses above the grounds are now at risk due to constant downpour.
Yanthan stated that he had already conveyed the issue to the district administration and district disaster management authority, Wokha. He added that the EAC of Aitepyong, Pukha Lam, had carried out on-site inspection on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the villagers stated that the contractor of the project, KN Mhonthung Lotha, has assured to address the matter after the monsoon season. Even though the walls have collapsed due to natural calamities, he has assured them to oversee the damaged as an act of social responsibility.
