KOHIMA — On Saturday, residents of Kezieke Colony in Kohima organised a cleanliness drive to clean their surroundings, including drainages, pavements, and roads.

The four-hour activity also involved filling up potholes at the old Sumo taxi stand within its jurisdiction, while two sanitation trucks from the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) were pressed into service to dispose of wastes.

To maintain cleanliness and discourage anti-social activities, strategic locations and shops along the colony’s roads are now equipped with lighting systems. Additionally, vendors within the colony’s jurisdiction have been instructed to place a dustbin at their respective shops for the convenience of customers and passersby.

The residents were reminded of the KMC’s June order, which highlighted the adverse effects of illegal and irresponsible littering and waste dumping in drains, leading to severe clogging that affects pedestrians and roads throughout the municipality.

The KMC order firmly stated that waste disposal is only permissible at designated commercial waste collection points or sanitation vehicles, while it also restricted illegal dumping in drains and vacant plots.

To enforce compliance, ward panchayats, councils and ward, colony, and sector sanitation committees have been directed to monitor and prevent illegal garbage dumping, littering, and drain blockages during construction.

It informed that offenders would face penalties of INR 500 for the first offence, INR 1000 for the second offence, and INR 2000 for the third offence as specified by the KMC.
