DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 20

Responding to the call of Dimasa Public Organisation Nagaland (DPON) and Dimasa Women Welfare Society (DWWS), over thousand rallyists assembled at Dhansiripar today to protest against the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl at Amaluma village, under Dhansiripar Sub-division, Dimapur on September 14.
The rallyists, including students in uniforms, young and old, men and women from as many as eight organisations, turned out in huge number to show solidarity to the victim’s family and demanded befitting punishment to the culprit. The victim, Remi Phonglosa, a student of Government Middle School, Amaluma Village, was residing with her aunt. The dreadful crime was committed last Sunday in broad daylight by one Pintu Hasham, son of Runil Hasham, of Hakhlik village of Nagaon district, Assam. The culprit, a truck driver, was caught by the public on the same day but he confessed to his crime to the police only the next day.
The rallyists first assembled at GHS Ground Dhansiripar before proceeding to submit a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Dimapur through SDO (Civil) Dhansiripar in presence of SDPO Niuland and OC Sub-Urban Police Station.
Some of the rallyists filled with deep anger were heard shouting slogans demanding death penalty to the culprit who is now under judicial custody. They also demanded early justice and appealed the law enforcing agencies to deliver justice through fast track court.
Earlier, addressing the rally, DPON president K Naben strongly condemned the horrifying rape and ruthless murder as ‘very unbecoming’ in a civilised society. He urged every right thinking citizen to join hands against such inhuman and barbaric act so that it does not recur in future.
Naben further urged the State government to strengthen the sub-divisional administration and police outpost at Dhansiripar sub-division with sufficient man power so as to tackle such crimes more effectively and promptly in future.
DWWS president Moromi Hojai while stating that women are no second class citizen expressed her fear that our society is not safe for women anymore. “We are here to demand justice for the innocent minor girl who was raped and murdered without any fault of hers,” she said.
Other speakers who addressed the rally included representatives from Kachari Tribal Women Organisation, Dimasa Students Union Nagaland, Garo Tribal Council Nagaland, Gorkha Union Dimapur, Ao and Sumi community of Dhansiripar sub-division, church leaders and DSSW general secretary.
All the speakers appealed the law enforcing agencies to punish the culprit according to the law of the land, so that justice is being delivered to the victim’s family. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” one of speakers voiced.
The rally was also attended by members of Mech Kachari Public Organisation and school students from four schools under Dhansiripar sub-division.

Four points memorandum jointly signed by DPON and DWWS
1. To award befitting punishment to the criminal who should not be given bail under any circumstances.
2. Not to transfer this case to Assam with the excuse that the culprit hails from Assam. The victim was a local inhabitant of Nagaland and also the incident took place here.
3. To refer the case of the victim to the Government of Nagaland, Home Department, Relief & Rehabilitation Branch for granting ex-gratia to the bereaved family.
4. Ro strengthen the sub-divisional administration and police outpost at Dhansiripar with sufficient man power so as to tackle such menace effectively and promptly in future.
