Dimapur, Nov. 1 (EMN): The female Amur falcon named ‘Longleng’, which was radio tagged in November 2016, is still active and the raptor’s transmitter shows that it is currently located at Hariatu Sumu area in inner Mongolia.
The DFO at Doyang plantation division, Chisayi, informed Eastern Mirror on Sunday that Longleng has been in this area for weeks now and added that they are trying to get more information from other state scientists who are currently monitoring the route of the migratory bird in order to get more information on why the bird is still in the same area.
Chisayi informed that the female Amur falcon has not moved from the Hariatu Sumu area since October 10. However, the DFO informed that there were small-scale movements during mid-September to mid-October.
According to the officer, they are yet to obtain clear cut information as they were still investigating the reason behind the delay of the movement of the bird.
Chisayi opined that they should wait for another week or two as ‘perhaps it may start later compared to the last few seasons.’
The DFO added that they are all eagerly waiting for Longleng’s return. Further, Longleng holds the record of being the longest-tracked falcon, according to the scientist who studies the migratory routes of Amur falcons.
It may be recalled that in April, Dr. Suresh Kumar, a scientist at Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun informed that ‘Longleng has so far provided 9623 locations’, and this time it might cross the 10,000-mark.
