What would you say of a person who takes along his axe into the water pond? Or about a man who would carry a spade and climb up on a tree?
These questions may seem to refer to someone who is confused or mentally retarded. But, I am about to briefly report what actually is happenning at Theiva Baptist Church, Theiva Village, Senapati District, Manipur. The incident does not seem to stray far from the standard of the above question.
Though Theiva Village was basically included in Senapati District, its ancestry has it that the inhabitants of the village descended from Ukhrul; and history has it that it has been one of the Tangkhul villages since time immemorial. The village church, I,e. Theiva Baptist Church, is also an active member of the Tangkhul Baptist Churches Association.
On 4th and 5th May 2016, about forty vehicle carrying 600 Poumais came to Theiva village spearheaded by Poumai Naga Union and Poumai Naga Baptist Association. Some of what they did to Theiva can be summarized as follows:
1. Breaking down the name-plate” Theiva Baptist Church” and replacing it with “Poumai Baptist Church”
2. Breaking down the Church door and conducting a worship service.
3. Dismantling the Church new building foundation stone.
4. Replacing the name-plate of Pastor’s quarter as, “Pastor’s quarter, Poumai Baptist Church.
5. Bringing in a new Poumai Pastor, though there is still an existing Pastor.
All these took place overpowering the local woman who tried their best to defend the sanctity and honor of their Church and their Village through peaceful means.
These acts have made us to think how Poumais stooped this low and resorted to such an extend when Christianity has surpassed a century in the state, and in a time when others ought to regard them for their spiritual and theological maturity.
