Imphal, Nov. 18 (EMN): The Quami Ekta Week was observed at Banquest Hall of 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles in Imphal on Nov. 18 Sat.
Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar were the chief guest and functional president of the observation.
Speaking during the programme, Biren Singh said, ‘Our differences viz. culture, religion, language etc. should not be a hurdle in bringing unity and creating sense of oneness in the country.’
Biren said that politicians would never succeed if they do not possess the nationalistic characteristics while citing that they should sacrifice and make commitment for the welfare, development and prosperity of the state.
Mentioning the role played by Indira Gandhi in unifying and in bringing integration of the country, he said she (Indira Gandhi) is often referred as ‘Iron Lady of India’ who showed the world that India has the potential and can play a pivotal role in international sphere.
While highlighting on the importance of observing “Quami Ekta Week”, he said it is the responsibility of an individual in creating awareness among the youths towards sense of unity, oneness and solidarity among all in the country. Mentioning that the sense of belongingness and integration is shrinking nowadays, he opined that human touch, recognition and respect should be an integral part of politics towards bringing development in the state.
The essence of bringing development is to make our lives simpler and easier, however, if there is no peace and understanding among us, there would be no meaning of development in the country, he added.
Deputy Chief Minister Joykumar in his presidential speech said that during such occasions, every citizen of the country should take pledge to uphold the integrity of the nation while citing an example of how India was easily colonised by the East India Company because of disunity among the Princely States.
He mentioned the contribution of Indira Gandhi to the cause of national integration in the country. One will always remember her contribution towards liberating Bangladesh in 1970’s, he added. Joykumar also stressed that India is filled with various problems and issues so every citizen should be aware towards the importance and value of national integration.
Chief Minister also administered the national integration pledge during the day’s observation which was attended by council of ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary Manipur RR Rashmi, DGP Manipur LM Khaute, top civil and police officials.
