Qualcomm unveils new Snapdragon G Series chipsets for handheld gaming
Qualcomm has introduced its latest range of Snapdragon G Series chipsets tailored for handheld gaming consoles. The new line-up consists of three tiers of chipsets, namely G1, G2, and G3.
“Dedicated handheld gaming devices are the best way to experience mobile games,” said Mithun Chandrasekhar, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
“But gamers want to be able to play all their favourite games across devices and ecosystems, whether it’s on their console, PC, or a cloud service. The new generation of Snapdragon G Series-powered devices will be the best place for gamers to play their favourite titles, offering them the ability to choose from the cloud, console, Android, or PC while on the go,” he added.
Snapdragon G1
The Snapdragon G1 chipset is tailored for fanless handheld gaming devices, facilitating game streaming locally or through the cloud. According to Qualcomm, the chipset prioritises reduced lag and extended battery life, offering high-quality console and PC game streaming for longer periods. The Snapdragon G1 series is built on the Snapdragon G1 Gen 1 Platform, featuring an 8-core Kryo CPU and the Adreno A11 GPU. The company claims that this combination will enhance the handheld game-streaming experience.
Snapdragon G2
The Snapdragon G2 chipset enables extensive mobile and cloud gaming with its optimised processor and advanced 5G and Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity via Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6700 Mobile Connectivity System, the company said. The chipset is built on the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 Platform and features the latest Kryo CPU (8 Core), a specialised Adreno A21 GPU for gaming, and the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF System.
Snapdragon G3
According to Qualcomm, the flagship Snapdragon G3 series aims for enthusiast-level performance and features by leveraging Qualcomm Technologies’ cutting-edge gaming capabilities. The chipset is based on the latest Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 Platform, which includes an 8-core Kryo CPU and Adreno A32 GPU. The company claims that it surpasses its predecessor (Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 on Razer Edge 5G) with a 30% CPU performance boost and double the GPU performance. Notably, it introduces advanced gaming features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, game super-resolution, XR glass tethering, low-latency premium Bluetooth audio with Snapdragon Sound Technology Suite, and ultra-responsive wireless speeds via Wi-Fi 7 High-Band Simultaneous (HBS), 5G sub-6, and mmWave connectivity.
Qualcomm stated that its expansion of the Snapdragon G Series product line is intended to respond to the changing landscape of gaming content, capabilities, and affordability. This expansion aims to cater to a broader variety of handheld gaming devices and form factors.
Prominent gaming handheld companies such as AyaNeo, Huaqin, Inventec, and Thundercomm are partnering with Qualcomm to launch new devices powered by Snapdragon G-series chipsets later this year.
