Dimapur, June 1 (EMN): Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School (PVHSS), Dimapur observed World No Tobacco Day on Friday by roping in a team of medical experts from Dimapur Dental Centre, Nutun Bosti as the resource persons.
According to an update from PVHSS, Dr. Naomi Rio Zhimomi, Dr. Arihant Jain and Dr. Vizo Solo from the Centre attended the occasion as special guests.
Speaking during the awareness programme, resource persons Zhimomi and Jain said that tobacco consumption is “one of the oldest evil habits in our society” and that people take in various forms, including, cigarettes, bidis, cigars, pan masala and gutka among others, informed the update.
The doctors told the gathering that taking tobacco invites various types of dreadful diseases, affects the health of person and consequently leads to agonising death. Tobacco primarily contains chemical compounds. Nicotine present in tobacco is highly poisonous substance and it can prove fatal if it is directly injected into the blood stream, they said.
Highlighting the ill-effects of tobacco consumption, the resource persons said that it causes cavities and loss of teeth, bad breath, yellow stains on skin and teeth and wrinkles besides other health complications like increase in blood pressure and heart rate, poor blood circulation in legs and arms, risk of heart attack and heart failure, and cancer related to lung, mouth, throat, intestine, kidney, and bladder. They also asked the participants to take oath not to consume tobacco in any form and promise to keep their surroundings tobacco-free.
Earlier during the programme, which was organised by PVHSS in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association, Nagaland state branch, Principal of PVHSS Monoj Bhattacharjee stressed on the ill-effects of tobacco consumption. He urged the gathering to refrain from taking tobacco products.
