Protesters target Sanjay Dutt over parole
A group of activists has taken to The Streets of Mumbai, India to stage a protest against Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt’s recently granted parole. The imprisoned actor was awarded a one-month release by Pune’s Yerawada prison authorities after applying for temporary freedom because his wife, Maanyata Dutt, had been taken ill earlier this month (Dec13).
She is reportedly suffering from heart and liver ailments.
However, protesters from India’s nationalist organisation, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), gathered outside Dutt’s residence in Mumbai on Thursday (26Dec13), demanding the cancellation of the actor’s 30-day parole.
It followed an earlier two-week release in October (13) so Dutt could seek treatment for a leg ailment.
The ABVP City Secretary, Yadunath Deshpande, told the Times of India he is surprised a man convicted for grave offences could be given parole twice in two months.
During the protest, Officers arrested 15 activists, but they were later released without charge.
Dutt was sentenced to six years in prison for buying weapons from bombers who were responsible for the 1993 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
He was released on bail in 2007 after serving 18 months of his sentence, but returned to jail earlier this year (13) to complete his five-year jail stint after an appeal for his freedom was rejected.
