[dropcap]T[/dropcap]hree months ago, I wrote about the significance of the number forty (40) with its general, biblical, symbolism, gematrix and occurrence. In fact practically every number from one to nine and zero has significance in some way or the other and in their various own ways and they do tend to affect us for better or worse. Today, we shall try and dwell on the number ten (10).
The number ten is only a part of the Number Theory which is itself a branch that grew out of human curiosity concerning properties of the positive integers, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…. also called whole numbers, natural numbers or counting numbers. These numbers were the first mathematical creation of the human mind; interest in them is as old as civilization itself.
Number theory has always fascinated amateurs as well as professional mathematicians, many of the problems and theorems of number theory can understood by laymen, although solutions to the problems and proofs of the theorems often require sophisticated mathematical background.Number ten (10) is a cardinal number one more than nine (9). Its Roman numeral is X or x. In phrases like “ten out of ten” refers to an excellent performance. “Ten to one” means very probably. In its derivatives, ten-fold is adjective and adverb also. The word is derived from Old English.
SYMBOLISM
Number ten is the symbol of the matter in harmony—4 + 6.
It represents the Creator and the creation, 3 + 7, the Trinity resting in the universe.
For Greek mathematician, Pythagoras, 10 was the symbol of the universe and it also expressed the whole of human knowledge.
Sum of 5 + 5, the number 10 represents the two opposite directions of the conscience knowledge.
According to H.P. Blavatsky, the 1 is followed by 0 indicates the column and the circle, meaning the principle of the female and male, and this symbol would refer to the androgyne nature and also to Jehovah, being at the same time, male and female.
The zero in the form of the circle is a symbol of unit, completing then the meaning of the number 1 to show that the number 10 contains all preceding numbers as a whole contains its parts.
The number also represents the first couple, the marriage: 1 = the man, 0 the egg fertilized by the 1. The ten gives the indication of a spiritual regression since the marriage is a consequence of the fall of man.
The number ten is regarded as the most perfect of all numbers, because it contains the Unit that did it all, and the zero, symbol of the matter and the Chaos, of which all came out; it then includes in the figure the created and the non-created, the beginning and the end (alpha and omega), the power and the force, the life and the nothing.
It represents the straightness in the faith because it is the first number (of two digits), just as hundred and thousand, explains Hugues of Saint-Victor.
According to Agrippa, “ten is the called the number of all or universal, and the complete number marking the full course of life.” Also, he attributes to it a sense of totality, the achievement, the return to the unit after the development of the cycle of the first nine numbers.
Ten represents the Revelation and the Divine Law.
For the Maya people, it represents the end of a cycle and the beginning of another. The ten was regarded as being the number of the life and the death.
In China, the cross represents the number 10—as the totality of the numbers.
