‘Promoting cultures can foster wisdom, knowledge-sharing’
KOHIMA — Development Commissioner of Planning and Transformation department, R Ramakrishnan, said that promoting cultures can foster wisdom and knowledge-sharing, enabling a broader perspective and profound understanding of different cultures, languages, and traditions.
The development commissioner was speaking during the Promotion Of Cultural Exchange event on the theme ‘Journey to the roots of culture,’ organised by the National Foundation for India and co-funded by the European Union, at Hotel 2k conference hall, Kohima, on Tuesday.
Ramakrishnan also said promoting cultures can also empower communities by preserving and promoting traditional crafts and sustainable use of natural resources, creating economic opportunities for local artisans and communities.
This in turn can generate a stable source of income and promote sustainable economic growth while preserving cultural heritage, he said.
He went on to say that cultural exchange can increase cultural understanding, dialogue, and cooperation, and also strengthen the communities and traditional systems.
“While the SDGs are global, their achievement will depend on the fact how much we are able to translate them into reality in our communities and societies,” he said.
Ramakrishnan further informed that Nagaland has been actively working towards achieving the SDGs through the SDG Coordination Centre (SDGCC) of the Planning and Transformation Department since 2019.
President of Naga Mother’s Association, Vilanuo Angela Yhome, said that culture and traditions is not only about the traditional attires or folk songs.
One must know the meaning of culture by knowing what they are wearing and these are something one cannot learn from school, college but from home, she said.
Yhome also stressed on the importance of reviving one’s mother tongue “and speaking in own dialect which is the real identity, culture, and tradition as Nagas.”
President of ARK Foundation, Ketho Angami, provided an overview of the programme objectives, while chairperson of the Kohima Educational Society, Dr P Ngully, spoke on the topic “Bridging the generation gap.”
