Prof. from Nagaland University awarded ‘Promising Indian Anthropologist’ in Bhubaneswar

DIPHU — Dr. Somenath Bhattacharjee, the first Professor of Anthropology in Nagaland University was awarded the ‘Promising Indian Anthropologist’ at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar on Aug. 13.

Bhattacharjee, who is a former faculty at Department of Anthropology Assam University in Diphu campus received the award at the ‘World Anthropology Congress 2023’ which was held from Aug. 9 till the 14th.

The award was handed over by Minister of Tribal Affairs Government of India, Arjun Munda.

Dr. Bhattacharjee who is originally from Kolkata, has been associated with teaching and research in anthropology since 2010.

He joined as the first Professor of Anthropology in Nagaland University in May, 2023.

An expert in the studies of tribal cultural practices, indigenous knowledge system, ethno-ecology and tribal health, he has more than 80 research papers in the Scopus indexed and UGC listed reputed journals as well as in edited books.

He is the author of 6 books published by national and international publishers.

As informed to this correspondent Dr. Bhattacharjee said, ‘without the appropriate anthropological knowledge, we really cannot preserve, protect and promote the age old indigenous culture and practices, along with the ideas of ecological sustainability’.

Dr. Bhattacharjee is dedicated to doing quality level anthropological researches in Karbi Anglong and wishes to popularise the subject of anthropology in the district.
