SRINAGAR: With BJP making massive inroads into Assam, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked the party to prepare an action plan for next year’s assembly polls. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta had met Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday and apprised her about the political developments in the state. Sonia asked Dutta to prepare an action plan for the 2016 assembly polls in Assam.
“We will appoint two agents for each assembly constituency. The president reviewed the functioning of over 24,000 booth committees appointed by the party. The focus is now on the booth committees,” Dutta told ET.
Sonia asked Dutta to review the works of ministers and MLAs from time to time. Dutta also met political adviser to the Congress president Ahmed Patel, general secretaries Janardan Dwivedi and CP Joshi and discussed measures to strengthen the IT and social media network of the grand old party. Gandhi has started focusing on Assam and it is being seen in the party as Congress’s preparation for the polls. Congress is in power in Assam for the third consecutive term. She has started meeting number of leaders from the state.
Former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar was among leaders who recently met her. BJP’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is fanning out in different areas of Assam. After putting its best performance, of seven seats, in the Lok Sabha polls, BJP put up an impressive show in the recently-held civic polls too.
RSS had a greater say in the candidate selection for civic polls. BJP had captured more than 20 town committees and 23 municipal boards while ruling Congress managed to win seven town committees and 9 municipal boards.
