Imphal, July 22 (EMN): The All India Congress Committee in-charge for Manipur and former union minister Bhakta Charandas today said that the party has begun preparation for 2022 elections in Manipur.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Charandas said, “Preparation for the election has begun since yesterday and in seven days we’ll wind up all the roadmap for the next 2022 elections”.
Manipur goes to polls in March 2022 along with Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa.
When asked about the resignation of the MPCC president from his post, the visiting AICC leader said, “At the moment, the resignation has been received and we will take a call very soon on that issue”.
On July 19, reports claimed that the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President, Govindas Konthoujam, a former minister who was elected six times as Congress MLA from Bishnupur assembly constituency resigned from his post. Govindas was appointed as President of MPCC in December last year.
After arriving in Imphal on Wednesday to take stock of the situation arising out of the MPCC president’s resignation from his post, the AICC leader had been attending a series of meetings with the MLAs and other party functionaries.
Criticising the ruling BJP led government in the state, he charged that except for curfew nothing had been done adding that the government does not have a policy.
It may be mentioned that the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the 2017 assembly elections, winning 28 out of 60 seats but could not form the government. Instead, the BJP, which won 21 seats, came to power with support of four National People’s Party MLAs, four Naga People’s Front MLAs and one MLA each from TMC, Lok Janshakti Party and an Independent.
