WOKHA — In a suspected case of election-related violence, one government-registered vehicle was set on fire by unidentified miscreants around 6:15 pm on Saturday in Wokha town, before it was doused off by the firefighters.

The damaged vehicles was said to be parked outside the house of one Rhontsuthung S Ezung, brother-in-law of Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe, who is contesting from 38 Wokha Town Assembly Constituency (AC) on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket.

Three candidates -- Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe (NCP), Renponthung Ezung (Bharatiya Janata Party) and N. Wobenthung Lotha (Indian National Congress) – are in the fray for Wokha Town seat.

Violent incidents were also reported from different localities of Wokha earlier in the day, including vandalisation of a house and manhandling of NCP youth president of Church Colony in Wokha.

However, the Officer In-Charge of Wokha police station told Eastern Mirror over the telephone that the police haven’t received a first information report (FIR) in connection with incidents that took place in Wokha town.

Saturday’s incidents happened close on the heels of Wokha Police requesting the citizens of the district to maintain peaceful atmosphere, following reports of threats and intimidation to voters in some villages. It also warned of taking strict action against people involved in offences.

Earlier this week, unidentified miscreants ransacked a house and injured two persons in Mokokchung town. The police said that a case had been lodged on this incident.
