Pre-monsoon rain lashes Nagaland amid reports of water scarcity

Amid reports of water scarcity in several places, Nagaland received a major spell of pre-monsoon rain on Monday, recording heavy rainfall in most part of the state and bringing down the mercury level.

Dimapur received a heavy rainfall on Monday, causing water logging in some localities but there was no report of flood even in flood-prone areas like Dhobinala and Burma Camp.

An official from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Dimapur, also updated this newspaper that there was no report of floods in the city.

However, some areas in Burma Camp, bus station and Supermarket experienced water logging, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Although the spell of rain brought relief to some residents, the vendors at Supermarket were worried the water logging will affect their business if it doesn’t subside.

Sources from Soil and Water Conservation dept. informed this newspapers that the entire state experienced rains on Monday with Dimapur (including new districts Chumoukedima and Niuland) recording rainfall at 90.2 mm, followed by Wokha (75.4 mm), Jalukie-Peren (53 mm), Zunheboto (44.2 mm), Tuensang (33.2 mm), Mokokchung (33.2 mm), Tseminyu (30.8 mm), Kohima (25.8 mm), Phek (20 mm), Kiphire (19.4 mm) and Mon-Shamator (16 mm).

It added that the other two districts — Longleng and Noklak — also received heavy rainfall though no details were provided.

More rainfall predicted

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast that the April 11 heavy spell of rainfall would continue over Assam-Meghalaya during next five days; over Arunachal Pradesh during April 13-15; and over Nagaland-Manipur, Mizoram-Tripura between April 13 and the 15th 

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning, is very likely over Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next five days, the department informed.

It further added that Dimapur would experience generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers till April 15 and rainfall on April 16 and the 17th.
