Dimapur, Oct. 18: The national general secretary (Finance) of National People’s Party (NPP), as well as the home minister of Meghalaya, James Sangma on Friday underscored the fluid nature of politics and maintained that the party does not consider the merger of its two legislators in Nagaland with the NDPP as setback.
Addressing a press conference in Dimapur, Sangma said that he was in Nagaland to meet party leaders and members, while also taking stock of the political atmosphere in order to pave a way forward for the party in Nagaland.
“I am strictly here on a party meeting and not as the home minister of Meghalaya,” Sangma asserted.
Referring to the merger the party’s MLAs with NDPP, he maintained that politics is always about “ups and downs” and that such mergers and changes occur in politics. He claimed that the NPP, despite being a young party, has been able to achieve its goals, and the status of a national party ‘with the love of the people’. “Our primary goal and objective is the people and to focus on them,” Sangma said.
Prodded to name which national party the NPP would prefer, Sangma said: “NPP is an independent party and we have a strong individual identity as a party.” He added that the NPP was formed to provide a voice in the Parliament for the people of the Northeast.
Present at the press conference was also Mutchu Mithi, the national general secretary (Political Affairs) NPP as well as MLA of Arunachal Pradesh.
The president of NPP Nagaland, Andrew Ahoto Sema said that the party could come together as one dynamic unit and be able to get the voices of the people heard at the Centre.
