Poor results of government schools in Mon due to teacher shortage, says Konyak Students’ Union
Dimapur, Aug. 27 (EMN): The Konyak Students’ Union on Saturday pointed out the acute shortage of teachers faced by government schools in Mon district, and attributed the poor performance of students in the HSLC examination to it.
In a statement on Saturday, the union said it visited two government high schools at Mon village and Chen loisho village on August 24 and the 26th respectively in view of its nil results in the HSLC Examination 2022.
The visit was part of its “Education Reformation Vision 2021-23” resolution, an update stated.
The union said that it interacted with students from both the schools and had a co-ordination meeting with the stakeholders from both the villages.
During the inspection, the union learned that both the high schools were short on subject teachers. The Government High School Chenloisho, which was upgraded in 2012, had no English and Hindi teachers appointed till date. It said the concerned School Management Committee (SMC) and Village Council, therefore, recruited two teachers on their own expense.
Moreover, both the government high schools were functioning without a headmaster and assistant headmaster, while the Government High School Mon also requires a teacher each for English and Math subjects.
It also learnt that most teachers in both the schools were under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), and they hadn’t received their salary for almost six months now.
The union pointed out that the primary section of the schools in both the villages had been neglected by the concerned authority by not deploying adequate teachers.
It said students do not have access to quality education, thereby resulting in nil result in board examinations.
Further, the union expressed resentment on the department over not paying heed to the deprivation faced by the students at grassroots level.
It, therefore, appealed to the authority to work more on upgrading education at the grassroots and deployment of adequate teachers.
The union also stated that the policy of downgrading high schools should not be applied to Mon district as the concerned authority is “equally responsible for bringing out the worst results by not appointing subject teachers”.
