Police rescue kidnapped victim, 1 kidnapper held

DIMAPUR Police personnel rescued one kidnapped person from Tolouzama area and arrested a kidnapper Friday evening.
The arrested kidnapper has been identified as Akashe Shohe, 26, son of Khevito, of Lukhuyi village under Aghunato PS in Zunhuboto district and presently residing at Purana Bazar, Dimapur, ASP and PRO Dimapur said in a release today.Police received a complaint from the victim’s brother that some miscreants had abducted his brother (a businessman) and taken him to an unknown place. After the abduction, he started receiving ransom calls asking him to hand over Rs 50,000 (negotiated down from Rs 1.5 lakh) for safe release of his brother.
Following the complaint, a combined team of Women Cell personnel and Special Police Team of DEF Dimapur swung into action in different locations to locate and rescue the victim.
At around 7.40pm on Friday, the kidnappers were located in a jungle (teak plantation) at Tolouzama, and when attempt was made to release the victim, the police rescue team were fired upon by the kidnappers, prompting the police team to fire back, the release said. After a brief exchange of fire, the victim was rescued and one kidnapper arrested while the other two kidnappers managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
One magazine with eight live rounds of M-20 pistol (dropped by the kidnappers) and two empty cases of 9 mm pistol were recovered from the place of shootout.
The victim was immediately taken to the hospital for medical examination and later on handed over to his relatives.
On preliminary interrogation, the arrested kidnapper revealed that he was an NSCN (U) cadre. He also disclosed he along with three others – Akato (Leacy of NSCN-U), Johnson (Lieutenant of NSCN-U) and Viloto abducted the businessman on November 15.
A criminal case has been registered in this connection and the accused forwarded to court for remand. Further investigation is on to ascertain the involvement of some other persons in the case.
