Dimapur, April 28

In yet another glaring example of the condition of the justice system in Nagaland, Dimapur police authorities on Monday chased down an extortionist, only to find out that the accused was also another habitual criminal – he is the main accused in the murder of a man, authorities inform on Tuesday.
And to add insult to citizens’ injury, he was on bail when the police hunted him down for extortion. The person is said to be the main accused for the murder of a hotel proprietor who was shot dead in June 2014, police said. This is not the first time in the state that persons with serious criminal past have been found engaging in crimes thanks to bail they were granted by the local courts. On April 27, police arrested one Boto Chishi alias Aboto, of Sikuir village under Kiphire district, after a chase that forced the police to open fire. He was a resident of Thilixu block-III during the time of his arrest. The accused was arrested from Murgipatti in Dimapur while extorting money “in the name of NSCN/GPRN (K),” the police state din a press release issued on Tuesday.
The police were on surveillance in the area when the accused and an accomplice was about to commit the crime. When confronted by the police, the duo fled from the scene which forced the police personnel to resort to ‘blank firing’ and the accused was chased down, the press release stated. Extortion notes and cash were recovered from Chishi’s possession. “The accused person has a criminal background who was arrested in earlier occasions. He is also the main accused for the murder of a hotel proprietor who was shot dead in June 2014. He was reportedly released by the court on bail in connection to the former case,’ the police said. The authorities have said that two others persons connected with the Monday case are absconding.

Liquor, Liquor, and more Liquor: enforcers have a field day

The ‘dry state’ of Nagaland continues to bathe in liquor. Enforcement personnel of the Dimapur police as well as the Assam Rifles are adding more to their liquor-catch credits.
On April 27, Dimapur police confiscated 62 cases of Indian-made foreign liquor during routine checks from a vehicle (NL07C-9010). Police informed of the catch in a press release on Tuesday.
In connection with the case, the police have arrested one Uttam Malakar, of Hojai in Assam, and a resident of LRC colony in Dimapur at the time of his arrest.
A regular case has been registered against him and the accused is being investigated by the East Police Station of Dimapur, the authorities stated.
