Dimapur, Oct. 3 (EMN): Nagaland Pig Farmers’ Association (NPFA) held an awareness seminar on the current scenario of the piggery sector in Nagaland at Mokokchung town on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion as resource person, chief veterinary officer (CVO) of Mokokchung, Dr. Sunep Imchen, explained on how to manage a pig farm. He advised the farmers to maintain hygiene and strict bio-security, which according to him, are the best ways to protect from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) and African swine flu.
Imchen also advised to keep the piglets at a confined zone and to avoid visitors as humans are also the carriers of viruses. He added that the pig farm must be well fenced.
As kitchen wastes are used to feed the pigs, Imchen urged the pig farmers to carefully segregate the kitchen waste before feeding. He also encouraged them to practice integrated farming as it is beneficial for farmers.
The resources person also advised the gathering to maintain a proper period of pig insemination. As concentrated feeds produced by companiesy are best for the pig, he urged the farmers to know the right amount of feed to be served.
