Phom community observes Bautung’s death anniversary

A monolith was also erected at Phom People’s Council (PPC) hall in Longleng town to commemorate the death anniversary. Parliamentary Secretary of Land Resources & Excise, BS Nganlang Phom; ENPO president, S Khoiwang Wangsha; and PPC president, P Chingan Phom graced the occasion as the chief guest, guest of honour and special guest respectively. The chief guest unveiled the monolith of Bautung Phom at PPC hall, while the Executive Secretary of Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA), Y Nuklu Phom, dedicated the monolith.Bautung was one of the 16 member Naga delegation, who went to Delhi for creation of Nagaland statehood on July 26, 1960. He was also the Interim Body Member (IBM) from 1961 – 1962 and the first Phom kilonser of the Naga National Council (NNC) from 1956 – 1958. Bautung also served as a teacher at GMS Longleng from 1958 – 1960. The present GHSS Longleng was named after him. He was assassinated in 1962. The speakers, who spoke at the programme, have unanimously urged to shun violence and bloodshed among the Nagas and asserted that fratricide killing will create further divisions in the society. Recalling the life of Bautung, speakers called upon the youngsters to emulate him to lead the people in the right direction. On the occasion, ENPO conferred a certificate in recognition on the leadership of Bautung as one of the most visionary leaders of the Eastern Nagas who has transformed dreams into reality. The programme was chaired by A Chingu Phom, president of Tamlu Buhu, while the welcome address and introduction was done by Rev. Dr. Anjo Keikung, Chancellor of North East Christian University (NECU). Besides speeches from the dignitaries, 24 others representing NGOs and public leaders spoke at the programme. The day-long programme was organised by Tamlu Citizens and family members of Bautung Phom.
