Dimapur, Oct. 16 (EMN): District tobacco control cell of National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Phek, has organised a sensitisation programme on the harmful effects of tobacco and Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 at 5th NAP battalion camp in Phek district on October 14.
Speaking on the subject, NTCP district nodal officer, Dr. Reyosalu Lase Vizo, informed that globally 8 million people die every year due to tobacco related diseases. She stated that in India 3500 people die every day due to tobacco related diseases which are preventable.
She challenged the jawans to keep away from tobacco so that none would fall victim to its harmful effects. To those who are willing to give up the habit, she urged them to avail the facilities at Tobacco Cessation Centre, District Hospital, Phek.
Joseph Thongliu, Deputy Commandant and chairperson of the programme, called upon the tobacco users to give up the habit in order to live a healthy life.
Altogether, 111 officers and jawans attended the sensitisation programme.
