- DIMAPUR — Nagaland’s
lone Rajya Sabha MP, S Phangnon Konyak, has been nominated as a member to the
court of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) by the Vice President of India
and Chairman of Rajya Sabha with effect from April 15.
- Established on July 19, 1973 through an Act of Parliament,
NEHU has long stood as a premier institution of higher education in India’s
northeast. Its jurisdiction initially extended to the states of Meghalaya and
Nagaland along with the then union territories of Arunachal Pradesh and
Mizoram.
- Over the decades, NEHU has played a transformative role in
shaping the intellectual and administrative fabric of the region. The
university has nurtured generations of academicians, bureaucrats, public
leaders and change-makers, contributing significantly to the nation’s
development.

- As per communication from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat,
Konyak’s nomination reflected her dedication to public service and deep
engagement with the educational and developmental aspirations of the northeast.
It stated that her association with NEHU resonated strongly with the
university’s motto “Rise up and build.”
- It further stated that the appointment was expected to
further enhance the institution’s linkages with the people of the region and
support its ongoing pursuit of academic excellence and inclusive progress.
