DIMAPUR — The 2nd Peren District Inter-Village Volleyball Tournament got underway on Wednesday, with Azeu Namcyn Hau, OSD to the Deputy Chief Minister (Planning and National Highway), declaring the tournament open at Mhainamtsi local ground in Peren.

Representatives from Peren District Volleyball Association (PDVA), Mhainamtsi Village Council, Peren District Athletic Association, Peren District VDB Association, NDPP party leaders from 7 Peren and 6 Tening assembly constituencies, and other dignitaries attended the inauguration.

In total, 49 teams from the district are competing in the four-day event, which will conclude on Saturday, according to a press release.

Speaking on the occasion, special guest Hau expressed gratitude to the Almighty for bringing the participating teams from across Peren together at Mhainamtsi and wished that everyone attending the programme would be enriched physically and mentally.

Recognising PDVA’s efforts in organising the tournament, he encouraged it to continue working hard with the passion and purpose of moving the youths of Peren forward. Hau challenged the youths to develop the habit of ‘playing to win’ at a young age, saying that ‘the will to win is more important than the skill to win’.

Sharing his thoughts on the benefits of sports, Hau stated that sports not only help people stay fit and healthy but also teach them to organise their time, strengthen friendships and bonds, and build relationships with others. Also encouraging the youths to believe in their dreams and potential, he said that to be a good sportsman, one must take care of oneself.

The OSD maintained that participating in sports helps build leadership skills because it allows players to surround themselves with competitive people and role models and learn from both.

Encouraging the players by elucidating the lives of great sportspersons, Hau noted that the state’s education system should focus not only on the development of the mind but also on the development of the physical body.

Earlier, the special guest hoisted the tournament flag, and the oath taking ceremony was administered by Adaube Mpom.
