DIMAPUR — Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan on Friday said that Zunheboto district, being the geographical centre of the state, is the heart of Nagaland and so peace and prosperity should radiate and emanate from it.
The governor also said that in the past Sumis were known for their hospitability, bravery, superior war skills and were considered to be a martial tribe among the Nagas.
But hurdles and obstacles have hindered the people’s aspiration for peace and development, Ganesan said. He therefore encouraged the Sumi people to uphold the rich tradition left by their forefathers and overcome all obstacles to march unitedly towards peace and prosperity.
The governor was addressing a public meeting at multi-purpose cultural hall, Zunheboto town, on his maiden visit to the district, a DIPR report stated.
Highlighting the drug abuse problem in Nagaland, especially among the youths, Ganesan said that drug abuse not only destroys the individual but also causes untold miseries to the family as well as the society.
He requested the civil societies as well as the law enforcement agencies to go all out against drug abuse and to step up efforts to check the inflow of drugs into the state, to make drugs “inaccessible to our youths at all cost.”
The governor also urged all the schools and colleges to adopt the new education policy (NEP 2020) as the main thrust of the new education policy is to determine and nurture the child potentials, increase the child reading and numeracy knowledge, and to improve the child’s creativity and logical thinking.
Maintaining that quality healthcare services should be accessible and affordable to all citizens, Ganesan requested the departments concerned to take the various health schemes to the door steps of the citizens.
Stressing on the availability of safe and clean drinking water, which is an important measure of human development, Ganesan informed that the central government through its Jal Jeevan Mission, has undertaken to provide clean drinking water to every home.
To this end, he asked the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to ensure that there is proper implementation of JJM scheme in all the districts.
The governor further advised every eligible citizen to have a Jan Dhan account, especially women, in order to avail all banking facilities. Ganesan requested the district lead banking authority to conduct financial literacy camps in order to create more banking and financial awareness.
Meanwhile, the governor also applauded the road conditions of Zunheboto and assured that more road projects are in the pipeline.
Advisor of Food and Civil Supplies and Legal Methodology, KT Sukhalu, in his speech, sought the governor’s intervention in setting up of nursing school in Zunheboto and also to upgrade the Khelhoshe Polytechnic Institute at Askhuto to an engineering college.
The advisor also informed that Zunheboto district still does not have an Executive Engineer (Housing) office and so for every work, the employees or the public have to go down to Mokokchung, causing immense hardship.
Sukhalu urged the governor’s intervention for setting up of EE office at in on an urgent basis.
The Sumi Hoho president and Sumi Kukami Hoho president, who also spoke on the occasion, also submitted a representation to the governor.
The public meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Zunheboto, Rahul Bhanudas Mali.
After the programme, the governor also held a meeting with district HoDs and later, a security co-ordination meeting.
