Jammu, Aug. 7 (IANS): In yet another attempt to increase tensions, Pakistan on Thursday opened fire with small arms and mortars along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K’s Poonch district, a defence officials said.
Defence Ministry spokesman, Colonel Devender Anand, said Pakistan initiated a unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing in Mendhar and Balakote sectors of Poonch.
“Pakistan’s firing and shelling started at 8 p.m. Indian Army is retaliating befittingly,” he said.
Since the beginning of this year, Pakistan has so far violated the ceasefire over 2,720 times, killing 21 civilians and injuring 94 others.
Lives and livelihood of hundreds of border villagers living along the LoC have been thrown out of gear because of the continuing cross-border shelling.
