AN orientation programme was organized by Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) –Regional Resource Agency (RRA) of National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) for the selected participating organizations on Wednesday at the conference hall, NPCB office.This year altogether 190 organizations representing NGOs, multipurpose co-operative societies, schools and colleges spread across Nagaland out of which Mon district 2 nos., Wokha district 8 nos., Peren district 35 nos., Mokokchung district 44 nos, Zunheboto district 16 nos, Tuensang district 5 nos, Kiphire district 3 nos, Phek district 10 nos, Kohima district 19 nos, Dimapur district 39 nos and Longleng district 9 nos has been selected under the NEAC on the theme, “Biodiversity Conservation“ in spreading awareness and action components.
Rusovil John, member secretary (NPCB) and State Coordinator (NEAC) spoke on the importance of biodiversity. He emphasized that Nagaland state is endowed with rich biodiversity and with varying physiographical features favouring the natural habitat for a large number of orchid species. Stating that of the many species of flora, family orchidaceae represents the most distinguished and diverse flowering plants of the state adding another status to the natural beauty.
He also mentioned that according to a survey conducted by the Forest Department of Nagaland, there are more than 360 species of orchids belonging to 87 genera and that is about 27.76 percent of the total India’s orchid species of 1300.
He also cited that the Government of Nagaland is making all out effort to conserve the rich bio resource and has set up a Bio Resource department, a Biodiversity Board besides the Department of Forests, Ecology Environment and Wildlife.
“Therefore, we should create awareness among our people of the natural heritage and conserve it for future generations,” he said.
He also stressed upon the conservation of Amur Falcon and appreciated the co-operation by the people in protecting and giving a safe passage for the Amur Falcon in the year 2013. Similarly biodiversity can be conserved in our state.
The programme was chaired by Akangmeren Imchen, Sr Scientific Assistant, NPCB. He made a powerpoint presentation to the participating organization about the guidelines and effective implementation of National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) 2013-14 programme.
