Diphu, Sep. 29 (EMN): Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS), Karbi Farmers Association (KFA) and Karbi Students & Youth Council (KSYC) have jointly condemned the physical torture of one Mariam Rongpipi by the officer-in-charge of Dokmoka police station, Nilamoni Malakar in Karbi Anglong, and has demanded stringent legal action against the police officer.

Addressing a press conference held at District Press Club of Karbi Anglong, Chairman, JACAS, Khorsing Teron said, ‘we strongly condemn the physical torture upon Mariam Rongpipi by the officer in-charge. The gory images of wounds and marks of the physical torture on the body of Mariam Rongpipi that is going viral on social media are disturbingly shocking’.

Mariam Rongpipi is a cook of Rong Ar-e LP School, Langlokso under Samelangso police station and wife of Kania Tokbi, a Karbi Language Teacher of Rong Ar-e ME school.

Maneswar Kalita, one of the teachers of Rong Ar-eM.E school, Langlokso went missing since Aug. 30 and for which, the couple Mariam Rongpipi and Kania Tokbi were asked to report at Dokmoka police station on Sep. 21 for interrogation in connection with the disappearance of Kalita.

They were detained at the police station that night for interrogation and O/C Malakar had mercilessly beaten them when the wife was undergoing treatment at Diphu Medical College & Hospital, said Teron.

Teron said the police officers involved should be brought to book under appropriate sections of laws including the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Acts, 1989.

Teron said the missing person case should be properly investigated as it could be part of the larger conspiracy to destroy the education system in that particular hill area. The real culprits involved should be brought to book with exemplary punishment, but in the process, no innocent persons should be harassed unnecessarily, Teron Asserted.

The organisations also appealed to the elected representatives of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to exert their influence and exercise their good offices in tackling the tense situation, Teron said and appealed all sections of the people of the localities and all civil bodies of Karbi Anglong to extend co-operation in finding the whereabouts of the missing teacher.

The press conference was attended by president, KFA, Tinku Ingti Kathar and president, KSYC, Sanjay Timung and other leaders.
