DIMAPUR — Commemorating Oral Cancer Screening Month (April), the National Oral Health Programme (NOHP), Phek, conducted oral cancer screening and oral health awareness programme with police personnel at the office of the superintendent of police (SP) in Phek town on April 30.
An update from the CMO office stated that the SP of Phek, Dr. Pritpal Kaur, has highlighted the participants on the side effects of tobacco and encouraged the jawans who consume tobacco to slowly limit their consumption and quit before it is too late.
Neiweu Losou, psychologist at DTCC Phek, shared the harmful effects of tobacco and its consequences. She informed that tobacco products cause dental disease, oral diseases and cancer. She also suggested tips to quit tobacco and stressed on the COTPA Act.
The screening on oral cancer was led by Dr. Kihito, dental surgeon, along with two nurses from District Hospital Phek.
A total of 49 jawans were screened in which two cases of pre-cancerous lesions were found and referred to the District Hospital for further review.
The programme was chaired by Nesulu Tetseo, social worker at DTCC Phek.
