Mokokchung, Jan. 28 (EMN):
Acknowledging the role played by the Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM)) in promoting and conserving the Ao language, the deputy commission of Mokokchung, Limawabang Jamir, has stressed on the importance of conserving one’s mother tongue.

Addressing the OKM members on the occasion of its 38th general conference at Mokokchung town hall on Thursday, Jamir urged the students body to promote and develop the Ao language and also inspire the upcoming generation to take keen interest in one’s language saying, “When language is lost, a tribe is lost.”

He also asserted that the world today does not need degrees but humble and responsible citizens, who could engage in self-employment and earn a sustainable livelihood. However, Jamir cautioned the students not to remain stagnant in this competitive world as the world would not wait for them.

“You have to go along with the rest of the world to be a successful person,” he added.

Meanwhile, 17 persons were conferred with OKM Achievers’ Award in the field of academic and competitive examinations during the formal programme.

In the panel discussion held on the topic “Renewing mindsets for a thriving society,” Akok Walling was the moderator while Khreho Athili, S Amarjit Mangang and Dr. BM Sunep were the panelists.

More than 100 delegates from various units attended the one-day conference held on the theme “Holistic transformation.”
