Dimapur, March 29: In a brutal incident, a one-year-old girl was allegedly raped at Burma Camp in Dimapur on March 27. The accused named Dilip Kumar has died under mysterious circumstances.
A source from the Childline Dimapur told Eastern Mirror that the child’s mother, who is a widow, works at a stone quarry as a daily wage earner. Her husband was reported to have died seven months ago.
The 45-year-old accused worked as a driver at the quarry. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he committed the alleged crime.
The accused died on the morning of March 28 in a hospital; and conflicting reports have emerged over the nature of his death. As of Friday, the cause of his death was yet to be ascertained.
According to one version, he died after succumbing to injuries inflicted by a mob that had trashed him after learning of the alleged rape. Another version claimed that he died from the injuries received after he fell and hit his head while fleeing from the mob.
The victim has also been discharged from the hospital and is ‘recuperating’, according to the source.
