KOHIMA — A political assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou, succumbed to injuries after being brutally assaulted in Phoolbhari, Kohima on Saturday. The tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for swift justice.
The two accused, identified as Neizosetuo Kire (24) and Khrietsonyü Whuorie (25), both reportedly wrestlers from Kohima Village, have been arrested.
A criminal case has been registered under sections 323/325/352/302 of the Indian Penal Code at the North Police Station, according to a update from PRO Kohima on Sunday.
It further informed that the North Police Station received a report on Saturday of an elderly person (Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou) being hospitalised at a private hospital “following a physical assault by some individuals in the aftermath of a vehicular traffic related scuffle”.
The victim’s son, who intervened to help his father, was also reportedly assaulted by the accused. Miasalhou was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday.
On Sunday, the Mezomia Mechü Kehou (Mezomia Citizens Forum) issued a condemnation note, stating that it was deeply disturbed by the incident.
They described Miasalhou, who was also the union’s president, as an upright person and condemned the ‘inhuman act’ of the two accused.
“We fervently condemn the crime committed by the two youths at their prime age upon an elderly and respected member of the society. The Mezomia Mechü Kehou urge upon the law enforcing agencies to immediately take up the matter and punish the culprits under all relevant laws of the land”, the MMK stated.
It further warned against any attempts to secure bail for the accused.
Stating that the Mezomia citizens have lost one of their finest leaders, the MMK asserted: “We shall fight until justice is delivered!”
