The Assam Rifles have apprehended an underground activist who the army said was armed.
On January 12, the press release stated, personnel of the 37th Assam Rifles conducted an operation under the aegis of the 6-sector Assam Rifles and apprehended an armed self styled “captain” of the underground group NSCN (IM).
“The operation was launched by the unit at 7th Mile, Chumukedima, based on information regarding movement of an armed NSCN (IM) cadre. A surveillance was established in the area to detect presence of the cadre,” the press release stated.
“Based on positive spotting by the source, a suspected individual was intercepted at about 6:30 PM. During search of the person, one point 22 pistol with magazine and one mobile phone were recovered.”
The Assam Rifles said that the individual identified himself as one Ambo Sema of Ikishe village near 5th mile and “revealed that he is a self styled captain of NSCN (IM) with army no-13201,” the press release said.
“The cadre was immediately apprehended. He further admitted that he was attempting to sell the recovered weapon to a potential customer. Actions of the NSCN (IM) cadre were in contravention to the Ceasefire Ground Rules. The apprehended cadre and recovered weapon were handed over to Diphupar Police Station on 12 Jan 16,” the Assam Rifles stated.
“Conduct of the pro-active operation and successful apprehension of NSCN (IM) cadre who was probably involved in arms nexus has served a dent to the activities of the group in Chumukedima. The operation has contributed towards improvement of security situation in the area.”
