Olympic day Run held in Imphal

KHUMAN LAMPAK, June 29: Olympian and Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha MC Mary Kom flagged off the Olympic day Run at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium on Wednesday morning. The event was organized by the Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) in collaboration with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur.

Around 700 sportspersons including high ranking officers led by the first Olympian P Nilakamal (hockey) of Manipur, his colleague Tiken, Dronacharya awardee boxing coach L Ibomcha, Asian Games gold medallist Ng Dingku besides a number of International and national players took part in the 2km run along Dingku road- Khongnang Ani Karak- North AOC- MMTA-Khuman Lampak.

The Olympic day is an annual celebration that commemorates the formal establishment of the International Olympic Committee on June 23, 1894. It was officially created in 1948 as a sort of birthday of the Olympic Movement”. The event was held today due to General Strike on June 23, according to MOA Secretary General Sunil Elangbam.

In 1987, in an effort to encourage all NOCs to commemorate and celebrate Olympic Day, the IOC Sport for All Commission launched the Olympic Day Run concept with the objective of promoting the practice of participation in sport by men, women and children from all corners of the world and all walks of life, regardless of athletic ability. The first Olympic Day Run covering a distance of 10km, with 45 participating National Olympic Committees was held in 1987.

Besides state government consultant Dr RK Nimai Singh and state sports movement functionary RK Ranendrajit, the Commissioner Youth Affairs & Sports H Deleep, Commissioner (MAHUD) R K Dinesh, Secretary to Chief Minister N Ashok Kumar took part at the Run and Director Youth Affairs & Sports Dr Harmit Singh Pahuja attended the day’s event.
