Dimapur, Nov. 10 (EMN): Members of the department of Management of Nagaland University interacted with members of the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organisation (NVCO) on Nov. 9 at the Kohima campus of the university.
A press release that was issued to the media on November 10 informed that Dr. Ditalak Mpanme, an assistant professor of management at NU, moderated the interactive session. Imlibenla and Yuwang Konyak, members of the Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF), highlighted the importance of food safety during the event, the updates said. They were stated to have invited the management students to attend the forthcoming 8th biennial general conference of the federation, especially for the panel discussions that are to be had on the topic ‘social justice towards economic development,’ which is to be held from Nov. 20 in Dimapur.
A member of the NVCO, Kezhokhoto Savi, highlighted the importance of consumer education during the programme, it was informed. Savi highlighted the legal services authorities’ commitment to protecting citizens’ rights, the press release stated. The legal authorities’ main aims are to provide free legal aid and advice, organise the Lok Adalat, and promote settlement of disputes through Alternate Disputes Resolution mechanisms and to provide compensation to victims of crime, among other cases, the updates stated.
The NVCO member explained the six consumer rights as has been provided in the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 namely the Right to safety, Right to be informed, Right to choice, Right to be heard, Right to seek redress and Right to Consumer Education.
“It is important to promote the basic rights of all consumers, to demand that these rights are respected and protected so as to protest against the market abuses and social injustices which undermine them,” the NVCO’s press release stated.
The updates stated that Savi appealed to the management students to be smart consumers as the topic of consumer rights under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 was part of their study course and ‘it would be become more important when they become managers in the corporate sector.’
The students were encouraged to first contact the Nagaland State Consumer Helpline Toll Free number 1800-345-3701, which is an alternate remedy mechanism, before they approach either the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum or the State Commission.
“Students raised several issues such as ‘goods once sold is not returnable’ which is not in consonance with the provision of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, some local packages product mentioned the date of packing in advance, etc,” the press release added.
