Retired surgeon and the first president of the Naga Students’ Union Delhi (NSUD), Dr Aryo Shishak, has encouraged the Naga students to have vision and work with sincerity to make ‘Nagaland a land of opportunity.’Dr. Aryo Shishak, who had served NSUD as president from 1963- 1964, said this at the finale of the Naga Students Union Delhi’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on the theme ‘The motto@50: Pause, Rewind and Play’ held on October 18 at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex Hall, INA, New Delhi, as the chief guest. In his address, the chief guest has shared story behind the formation of the NSUD in 1963, and how God has rewarded them for their faithfulness with the completion of 50 years of the NSUD’s existence. He encouraged the Nagas to have a vision, and with sincerity make Nagaland a land of opportunity.
In order to be successful, he has encouraged students to have dreams and determination and to never give up because neither is success final, nor is failure fatal. He also encouraged the young Nagas to look beyond government service and emphasized upon the need to venture out beyond writing competitive exams.
The chief guest was escorted to the venue by a group of warriors, accompanied by the NSUD president Lhusisato Iralu and distinguished elders.
The programme began with the lighting of lamp by the chief guest, which was followed by releasing of the ‘History note on the NSUD’s 50 year history.’ Pastor Chenithung Ezung of the Lotha Christian Fellowship, Delhi, has said the invocation prayer.
In his presidential address, Lhusisato Iralu reminisced about the long and exciting journey that NSUD had traveled the past 50 years wherein he stated that the 50th anniversary celebration was not just about the mere existence of a union, but more importantly about the unity that the NSUD has always sought to represent and the unity that it has enjoyed these past five decades.
He reiterated that NSUD’s ardent desire for oneness of the Nagas would remained and impressed upon the members on need to be honest and transparent with each other.
NSF president, Tongpang Ozukum, in his address, stated that the NSUD’s golden jubilee was significant because it was formed in 1963, a period when the Nagas hardly ventured out of their own cocoon. He acknowledged that what NSUD is today was because of the hard work, sacrifice and far- sightedness of the former leaders.
NSF president also made a passionate appeal to the Ao Students’ Union and NSUD to set aside differences and urged the ASUD to return to the NSUD fold. He emphatically stated the need for Nagas to forgive each other, to reconcile and live together as one people.
A ‘Cultural attire walk’ showcasing the various hues of the Naga tribes and a ‘Harmony medley dance’ directed by NSUD general secretary, Huten Alexander has added colours to the celebration.
The presence of former NSUD executives in the golden jubilee celebrations were also acknowledged with presentations followed by the introduction and presentation of the ‘Inspiration Awards’ which has been instituted for 8 categories namely Literature, Music, Academic, Enterpreneur, Administration, Missionary, Medical and Social uplift as a mark of recognition in their respective fields.
The award recipients in the various categories were Monalisa Changkija, Editor of Nagaland Page for Literature, Obed Zeme for Music, Zaren Odyuo for Enterpreneur, Keduovino Keditsu for Medical, Prof Darlando Khathing, Vice Chancellor of Jharkhand University for Academic, Luckson Seltun for Missionary, Armstrong Pame for Administration and Tuisem Shishak for Social uplift.
Theophilus Rangmathat, member of the event planning committee, has delivered the vote of thanks and Seltun Luckson, home missionary and recipient of the Inspiration Award for the ‘Missionary Category’ closed the programme with the benediction.
The celebrations ended with the ‘Golden Concert’ which saw a performance by 7 year old Lanlan Huileng, an aspiring ‘India’s Got Talent’ contestant, followed by ‘Polar lights,’ a young and highly talented band from Nagaland and the world famous Shillong-based Blues & Jazz band ‘Soulmate.’
