DIMAPUR — District mission management unit of the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM) organised a ‘Millet mela’ at Government Middle School, PHED ward in Kiphire town on August 10.
Speaking at the event, the deputy commissioner of Kiphire, John Tsulise Sangtam, has emphasised on the significance of millet, especially in the context of 2023 being designated as the ‘International Year of Millet’ by the United Nations. He pointed out its historical importance as a staple food source and its nutritional value.
Sangtam further called for renewed efforts in promoting millet cultivation and its utilisation.
Tethsomong, RJT from NSRLM Kiphire, highlighted the benefits of millet consumption, including its nutrient-rich nature and potential health benefits. He urged the community to embrace large-scale millet production and stressed on its marketability potential.
The event featured a millet recipe competition involving 5 blocks under NRLM, Kiphire, where winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates.
The millet mela, which coincided with a mid-day meal programme at the school, was chaired by Ranchopila L Sangtam, AC Longmatra block.
The programme concluded with an address by DC Kiphire, further fostering awareness of the nutritional benefits of millet.
