DIMAPUR — Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and the Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) have vehemently condemned the reprehensible police assault on Moalong Jamir, a second-semester student of Tetso College, perpetrated by the Anti Vehicle Thief Squad (AVTS) team of the Nagaland Police on January 29.

“Moalong Jamir’s brutal encounter with the AVTS has not only left the entire student community in shock and disbelief but has also raised serious questions about the excessive use of force by few personnel from the law enforcement,” NSF said.

It has expressed solidarity with the victim and strongly denounced such act of violence against a student pursuing his education or upon any individual. It added that the injuries inflicted upon Moalong Jamir, including damage to his left ear drum, a fractured spinal cord, and a swollen kidney, revealed the gravity of the situation.

The NSF has underscored an urgent need for a thorough and impartial investigation to bring those responsible to justice. It also called for immediate suspension of the erring personnel responsible for the assault on Moalong Jamir within three days and that the suspension order be brought in public domain.

It cautioned that failure to take decisive action against those responsible would compel the Federation to pursue its own course of action to ensure justice for the victim and to prevent the recurrence of such heinous acts.

NSF further called upon all conscientious citizens, civil society organisations and the public to join hands in condemning such act of brutality.

In another statement, the Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) has termed the January 29 incident at New Showba village as “outrageous violation of human rights and an affront to the principles of justice and dignity.”

OKM stated that such barbaric behavior perpetrated by those entrusted to uphold the law was a grave betrayal of public trust and an assault on the very fabric of the society.

It has demanded immediate and decisive action from the competent authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous act are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. It also insisted on a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident with transparent oversight to guarantee justice for Jamir and his family.

Stating that there can be no excuse for the abuse of power and the flagrant disregard for the rights and safety of individuals, it reiterated its firm stance against all forms of violence and oppression.

OKM further called upon the fellow-citizens and civil society organisations to condemn such disgraceful acts and advocate for a society where justice, dignity, and respect for human rights prevail.
