Kohima, March 20 (EMN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) commemorated its 34th Martyrs’ Day at NSF Martyrs’ Park in Kohima on Friday to pay tribute to Kekuojalie Sachü and Vikhozo Yhoshü who were killed in a police shooting on March 20, 1986 during a peaceful protest rally called by the federation.
The NSF organises the event every year in remembrance of Sachü and Yhoshü, who fell victim to an indiscriminate firing by the state police force 34 years ago. The duo was participating in a peaceful rally organised by the NSF to protest the state government’s decision to introduce Indian Police Service cadres in Nagaland and the extension of the Disturbed Area Belt from 5-20 km along Indo-Myanmar -- erstwhile Burma -- border.
“Our martyrs are the pride of the NSF and we express our gratitude and honour the sacrifices they made for the Nagas,” NSF president Ninoto Awomi said at the commemoration event.
"Today we offer our homage to the two noble souls whose martyrdom has once again renewed our aspirations and our hopes with the strengthened sense of direction and purpose towards a brighter tomorrow," he added.
Awomi also stated that the Naga youths and the younger generation would forever remain indebted to the martyrs.
The service was marked by laying of floral wreath on the graves of the ‘martyrs’ and the gathering observed a one-minute silence for them.
