DIMAPUR — The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has denounced the decision of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to schedule December 3, a Sunday, as the date of vote counting for the bye-election to the 43-Tapi assembly constituency.

The federation in a press release said, “This contentious choice, which has been a matter of debate ever since the BJP assumed office, has raised concerns over the potential disregard for the religious practice and beliefs of the Christian community.”

It said the decision to set the counting on a Sunday appears to disregard the sentiments of the Christian community as Sundays hold deep significance for Christians worldwide as a day of worship, reflection and strengthening the faith of the Christian community.

Questioning the Indian government’s rationale behind scheduling official activities, events and programmes, time and again, on days that have religious significance for many of the citizens, the NSF said the decision seems to underscore a lack of consideration for religious diversity and contradicts the principles of equality and secularism that the democracy upholds.

“It is imperative to accommodate the religious obligation of all the citizens, as this is fundamental to preserving the principles of democracy and secularism. The Naga Students’ Federation urges the government to re-evaluate this decision and explore alternative options that honour the religious diversity of all people,” the federation said.
