NSDMA warns thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall may affect several Nagaland districts till May 25 amid intensified pre-monsoon activity

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Friday issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall in several districts between May 23 and the 25th, with the heaviest impact expected over the next two days.
According to the advisory, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, winds of 30–40 kmph and heavy rainfall are forecast at isolated places across multiple districts.
The most widespread impact is expected on May 23, when Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha and Mokokchung districts are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Zunheboto, Longleng, Mon and Tuensang districts are also likely to receive thunderstorms with lightning. No warning has been issued for Phek and Kiphire.

On May 24, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is expected to continue in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima and Wokha districts. Mokokchung and Mon may also witness heavy rain along with thunderstorms and lightning, while Zunheboto, Longleng and Tuensang are likely to receive thunderstorms with lightning.
Weather activity is expected to weaken by May 25, although thunderstorms with lightning remain likely at isolated places in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng and Mon districts. No warning has been issued for Phek, Kiphire, Zunheboto and Tuensang on that day.
The authority stated that no weather warning has been issued for May 26 and weather conditions are expected to remain generally stable across Nagaland.
With pre-monsoon weather activity intensifying, NSDMA advised people not to shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms and to avoid water bodies. Travellers have also been asked to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone and low-lying areas.
It further urged the public to follow advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department and district administrations for updated information.
