NSDMA observes International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction Day

Dimapur, Oct. 13 (EMN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), under the state Home department, observed the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at its Secretariat in Kohima on October 13 on the theme ‘Disaster risk governance’.

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction has been observed worldwide since 1989 after a call by the UN General Assembly to promote a culture of risk awareness and risk reduction, an update from NSDMA, an update from the principal secretary R Ramakhrishnan stated.

NSDMA joined the rest of the country in observing the DRR day with focus on disaster risk governance to reduce the number of people affected by disaster and also to reduce economic loss. NSDMA collaborated with the Institution for Disaster, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA) from Gujarat in observing the day.

To mark the occasion, a webinar was conducted with its advisor Kazheto Kinimi. In his opening remarks, Kinimi stated that the Covid-19 has disrupted the countries globally and stressed that a clear vision is needed to act on scientific evidence which could be achieved through disaster risk governance. He also stressed on the need to look into the Sendai Framework for DRR (2015-2030).

The inaugural and introductory remarks was given by IDEA director Neelay Shrivastava, while the launching of community outreach programme (COP) was done by IDEA DRR lead Pooja Saxena, and the launching of online DRR quiz by IDEA research analyst Himani Tiwari.

The report also stated that lead UNICEF from Assam, Suresh, spoke on UN International Children’s Education Fund, while Dr. Ritu Chauhan, WHO health securities and emergency team, and Dr. Shiela, SMO, Nagaland WHO, also spoke on behalf of the WHO.

A brief talk on DRR activities in Nagaland was also delivered by Johnny Ruangmei, OSD NSDMA. He also moderated a panel discussion by community on DRR during the webinar.
