DIMAPUR, AUGUST 7: NSCN/GPRN said the public consultation initiated by the Council of Naga Affairs and the Naga Literature and Culture (Central), Myanmar, at Khamti on July 30 purportedly to rally public opinion in favour of attending the upcoming 21st Century Panglong Conference on behalf of the Nagas in order to put into effect a memorandum to the Myanmar Government demanding for “Federal Status” under Myanmar constitution was unwarranted and a complete contradiction to Naga sovereignty struggle.
NSCN/GPRN was responding to news report which was published in some section of the local dailies pertaining to 21st Century Panglong conference. NSCN/GPRn through its MIP said nearly seventy years Naga’s struggle for sovereign independent nationhood cannot be equated or subjected to demand for mere constitutional reforms under the occupational authority.
It stated that September 13, 2007, United Nations declaration on the rights of indigenous people (UNDRIP) supported by a majority of 144 countries, though it was a significant international effort to help eliminate human rights violation, discrimination and marginalisation against world’s indigenous population, wass not legally binding under international law and therefore not a political solution to the Indo-Naga –Myanmar political issue.
The NSCN/GPRN, therefore, censured any move by vested section to demand for any alternative other than sovereignty and further cautioned that NSCN/GPRN would not remain a silent spectator to the unfolding sub-national activities at the behest of few vested interests attempting to misguide the innocent common Nagas.
